An existing collapsing garage was replaced with a combination garage and garden studio. Large, full-panel sliding doors face the garden while a mute facade faces the laneway. While thermal performance is not required, a split insulation wall assembly and cold roof contributed to R values meeting new-build residential construction in order to provide a year-round usable temperatures with minimal intervention. Simple construction materials were selected for their low embodied energy and recycling potential. In creating a versatile space we expanded the Owner’s use throughout life’s seasons.
