401 MEDIA ARTS RESEARCH COMMONS

2018

Project Architect: Christie Pearson, with Barry Isenor at Team Project

6,700 SF

The Commons @ 401 Richmond brings together five organizations and festivals that support a variety of artistic practices, including visual, media and performance art. These include Vtape, Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, FADO Performance Art Centre, imagiNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival, South Asian Visual Arts Centre (SAVAC). The Commons is a collaborative space for diverse artistic and cultural communities to come together for exhibition, presentation, learning and research. Working together allowed for expanded and improved facilities for each group and larger, more flexible communal spaces including a research library, exhibition space, meeting rooms, lounge, kitchen, and screening room. Douglas fir frames wrap glass dividers that create individual office spaces. The final phase of construction is anticipated in the summer of 2018.
